2 hours of tae kwon do last night, again with no sparring because the vents were off and the floor got slippery because we were sweating like horses. I did get
to practice my spinning hook kick, which is good because I need the practice. Oddly, this one works better on the left than the right; most of my other kicks
are better on the right. Oh, and we got another new white belt, instructor's lesson plan out the window again.
25 minutes of strength training this morning. I thought I might have made it to 24 modified pushups last night during the warmup, but it's hard to tell when I have to count out loud at his cadence which doesn't quite match mine toward the end, when I'm slowing down. So I tried this morning and made it to 20 before slowing down much, and had to pause once before reaching 25, so I might be able to do the whole set next week when I'm leading the warmup. CC, running all out will also make a lot people feel pukey. Try slowing to a cool-down jog, then a walk, for about 5 minutes after your sprint and you might feel less pukey when you move to the weight machines. |

we were sweating like horsesDo horses sweat more than pigs? Come to think of it, I've never actually seen a pig sweating, but sweating like a pig is a common saying. I've never heard sweating like a horse before, but I've definitely seen horses all shiny with sweat after a race. Odd. |

I thought pigs didn't sweat, which is why they wallow in the mud.

25 minutes walking to warm up and cool down from 50 minutes of boot camp and 35 minutes of strength training. And I learned that the tae kwon do room isn't
the only one with a major humidity problem; the floor in the exercise studio was so wet it was slick as ice, and the mirrors all fogged up even though both
doors were open to the hallway.
My Y sucks. They've got a lot of balls charging $51/month for membership. |

Seventy minutes at Curves today. A new high!
I thought pigs didn't sweat, which is why they wallow in the mud. No, they wallow in the mud so that they don't get sunburned. People and pigs and one other animal that I don't remember are the only animals that get sunburned. The Curves branch owner, "Cathy," whom I hadn't met before, was working as the manager today. Afterwards, my friend told me that she and Cathy were talking about my exercise routine, in which I go on the machines (and don't stand on the blocks to swing my arms) for at least an hour at a time, and my friend said that Cathy said that I'm not supposed to do that. Well, I don't care. I chatted with Cathy for a few minutes afterwards, and she didn't mention it to me. Besides, I'm very careful not to interfere with anyone else's circuit routine. When I started, I was one of eight women. About twenty-five minutes before I finished, there were just one other woman and me exercising, and I exercised my last fifteen minutes all by myself. "Dee," the manager who is considering hiring a trainer so that she can get rid of her stomach, had said it was perfectly okay to exercise for more than a half hour. She even made a joke that after I do two circuits, the typical amount of exercising, I should swipe my card again. Afterwards, we went out to lunch with my friend's friend that she ran into at J C Penney yesterday. I had a grilled balsamic chicken sandwich with peppers, portabella mushrooms, and mozzarella. And fries. It was really good. All I've eaten since I've gotten home is a dinosaur's egg (and yes, iME, it was very good). I forgot to say that on Monday, there was a young woman at Curves trying out the machines, and Dee was explaining how to use them. Afterwards, I asked my friend, "Did you see the SIZE of that woman who was trying out the machines?" My friend said, "Yeah! She's even skinnier than Dee!" I didn't know if she had signed up, but my friend said that she saw her sign up. I said that she was so thin that I didn't know why she felt that she had to pay money to work out. I wondered why she didn't just do jumping jacks at home or put on a CD and dance. My friend agreed with me. Of course, I knew why she joined Curves. There is always someone out there who is skinnier or in better shape than you. Dee probably wants to hire a trainer so that she can look like the skinny woman, and the skinny woman probably has a skinnier friend. |

I like to work out with people. The positive peer pressure helps me. At home, all I want to do is lie around and watch TV. I'm not very driven --
definitely not to do jumping jacks at home, or to put on a CD or dance. So I can see why someone who is already thin might want to join Curves (or a gym)

Maybe she wants to gain strength or muscle, but I don't know if the Curves routine would do that for her.

I didn't think of that, MM. I bet you're right. It's just that it costs so much to go to Curves. But I have my friend staying
here, so we can get after each other to get on the treadmill. We haven't danced or done jumping jacks at home, though.
I'm not sure either, iME. I was hesitant about joining Curves, because I wanted to be able to work on the machines as long as I wanted to (because it's all about me), and I didn't want to spend half of my time there swinging my arms, which I could do at home if I were sufficiently motivated. Why pay good money to go somewhere and swing my arms? But I found out that I can stay out of everyone's way and get a good workout. When necessary, I cross the circle to get to a machine to work out on. I don't worry about spending an equal amount of time on each machine. But then, as I've said before, my goal is to lose weight, not to gain strength or muscle, although I see that gaining muscle helps the weight come off more quickly. And I think I'm helping more body parts than if I were spending all of that time on the treadmill. |

As for why skinny people join gyms--I imagine it's so they stay skinny. I doubt that all skinny people have naturally fast metabolisms, so at least some of them have to exercise and watch what they eat. (Of course, some don't. A college roommate was stick-like and never exercised and didn't watch what she ate. Still doesn't, as far as I know, and was still super thin after having a baby.) Or, maybe she realized she was really out of shape, even if she didn't look it. |

That reminds me of some naked photos I saw of Gwenyth Paltrow back in her Brad Pitt days. The photos were actually of Pitt, published in Playgirl, but Paltrow
was in them too. They were long lens jobs from some resort they were at & they were naked on their balcony & the like. As skinny as she was back then,
I was stunned to see significant cellulite on Paltrow's thighs. I think she's embraced yoga or pilates since. I did feel bad spying on them once
removed, but I have to admit it made me feel better to see the shape of her thighs, and at the time I didn't even have any cellulite myself.

30 minutes running this morning. Boot camp didn't make me as sore this week as last, but he had to skip the lunges & side hops & running back &
forth because the floor was too slippery. Also, I seem to have hurt my right shoulder, not during boot camp but in the weight room afterward. Probably during
the chest flye, which I should probably do on the machine instead of with free weights. I just hope I can do pushups tonight without aggravating my shoulder
any further.
I was surprised to get a compliment from one of the women in the boot camp class last night. I ran into her in the locker room and she said I did a great job. I joked that it almost killed me, while wondering how she managed to work out in that steamy room wearing long pants, long sleeves, and a head scarf without passing out. Then afterward I thought Hey! How the hell old does she think I am? |

A half hour walk on the treadmill.
The registration fee at Curves is $75.00 plus tax, which brought it up to $80.25. I don't know what the base monthly fee is, but with the tax, it is $41.73. It will get charged to my credit card automatically, which means that I won't have to worry about remembering to pay it. Due to the campaign that was running when I joined, I don't have to pay the monthly fee for July and August. I have a feeling that there is always a campaign running or one that is about to start running. The contract commits you to a year, but you can get out of it if you want. You just pay a penalty. If you're sick or injured enough that you can't go to Curves for a while, you have to bring in a doctor's note, and then you don't pay the monthly fee. If you don't cancel after one year, your contract is automatically renewed for two additional years, but you can get out of it if you want, and the two year automatic renewal means that your monthly fee is locked in and won't increase over those two years. If you drop out and then change your mind within a certain amount of time (I forget how long, but I think it's a few years), you can rejoin without having to pay another registration fee. As for cellulite, as you noticed, iME, even skinny women can get it. I don't think that cellulite has anything to do with being overweight or not being fit. I think that it's just one of those things that might affect you or might not. I have a little on my thighs, but it looks like creases, not dimples. It doesn't bother me, maybe because my other body parts bother me more. I don't have any on my butt. I remember reading somewhere that a woman was watching Geena Davis on a talk show, and she said, "When she crossed her legs, I saw dimples." And she figured that if someone like Geena could get cellulite, then everyone could get it. Finnan, be careful with your shoulder. You don't want to wind up with frozen shoulder. |

Ooh, that happened to a neighbor of mine (frozen shoulder.) It took quite a bit of therapy to work out.
Springbarb (or anyone), does the Wii offer a way to get in cardio work? That's what I need -- stuff to elevate my heart rate and keep it up-- and that's the stuff that is hardest for me to do by myself, because I is lazy. I need some kind of external push. |
