I'm just a bill...yes, I'm only a bill...

I'd call it cowardice but that's me. I said it long ago but the terrorists won when we started compromising our principals. I don't know if I would call Obama a coward. Here's my thing: we've already seen ample proof during his short time in office that he's willing to stiff-arm his allies. And sometimes you have to do that, that's the law-making process. What I want to see is some--any-- willingness on his part to take a battle to his opponents over some issue and really fight for it. Marriage equality would do but it doesn't have to be that. Just something. |

That's the issue with Guantanamo, right? I haven't been following this terribly closely, but it seemed that he was very much for closing it; the
problem is that Congress--both Dems and Republicans--are so against bringing detainees here that closing it is being made impossible. So the issue is that
Obama isn't fighting them enough? This seems to me a separate issue from holding detainees without trial, which is just flat-out wrong.

What I'm thinking about regarding this issue is his assertion that there are still a few people who are so bad that even though they haven't committed
a crime that we can convict them of, we would still need to hold them forever. I find that a troubling POV.
I was listening to a bit of NPR this morning and John Barry, the head of the Office of Personnel Management and a gay man, was saying that we all need to understand that Obama can't get everything done right away, and that he has absolute faith in Obama. Which is good for him, I'm sure. Admittedly he's closer to Obama than I would be, and might be privy to more behind-the-scenes action. We'll see. |

What else is he going to say, "I'm really disappointed in my boss"?

I know -- that's why I didn't say "John Barry said it, so I believe it!"

I hope it's not for his ill-conceived proposal to give even more power to the Fed.

I've been hearing about this, but I have to admit it hasn't penetrated my consciousness yet. Can you point me in the direction of a good overview?

Has anyone been following this Where in The World is South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford story?
He was missing from the capital for a few days, without telling his staff, though his wife said that she wasn't worried about him. Then his staff said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail which...okay, I guess. Nothing wrong with doing that, but you'd think you'd let someone know. Now, the truth comes out that he's been in Buenos Aires for a week. None of these places are bad places to be, but why all the secrecy and confusion? |

I have been following it and I don't understand the secrecy and confusion. But I also think that this is being blown out of proportion a smidge, like with
this Politico story. I am not saying it isn't a little
strange but I feel as if they are trying to divine too much of his character with this.

Blowing things out of proportion is definitely Politico's stock in trade. He apparently is having a press conference today at 2 p.m. and that should be
interesting.

He was out of the country all this time & it took that many days to find out? Isn't there a quick way to check if someone's passport has been used?
I have to say I didn't expect international travel to be involved in this story.

Last night they were still claiming on the local news that he'd been hiking the Appalachian Trail.
I would hope it would require a warrant to find out if someone's passport has been used. Besides (says the person who's never traveled outside the US aside from an afternoon in Tijuana), don't you use your passport on the way into a country, not out of it? |

I would also hope it takes something more substantial than reporters' questions to check to see if a passport has been used. Presumably, he used a credit
card while he was in Argentina, too, but it is not as if the media had access to that or his cell phone records, and nor should they have access. It is not as
if some crime was committed here - his family didn't report him missing and there was no supposition that foul play was involved or that he was on the lam.
So while I think that it is a little strange that he apparently "disappeared," I think that the media mini-frenzy about it has been over the top.

Oh, for God's sake.* At this point, I could not care less about any of these politicians and their affairs.
* Exasperation is not directed at you, iMissEthan, but politicians and the media. |

Hey, don't blame us!
But, I guess now one can officially rule out the 2012 thing. |
