Ain't that the truth. Today I had one of those asshole customers who came in and was returning two cds. He looks down at my stupid nametag and says
"How is your day,Judith?", all Lord of the Manor-like. I stop and say "Ok,..." pausing to get his name. "What's your name?"
He pauses and can't believe I would be so presumptuous, I suppose. "Bob" he replied. "How's your day, Bob?" I asked.
I've not been in a good mood most of the day except for some brief moments. Just one of those days, I suppose. |

So much hate to Best Buy and The Geek Squad. We brought my niece's laptop in 11 days ago, because it was having problems. Since then, we've given them
$450 (enough to buy a new laptop, at least a cheap netbook), and they haven't done shit. My sister has called them numerous times; the phone just rings and
rings, until the call rolls over to the regular Best Buy number and then someone has to try to go and physically track down someone for her to talk to.
Seriously, she has spent so much time trying to get answers from them. First, they said the computer was full of viruses, and they were going to charge $300
for the evaluation, clean up, and protective software. Then, they decided that the computer needed a new hard drive. I went in last Saturday to give them the
Toshiba installation disc and pay the $150 additional needed to cover the cost of the hard drive. I specifically asked when the computer might be ready and was
told 24-48 hours. I think my sister called Monday and Wednesday or possibly Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I know on Wednesday (after another long wait to talk
to someone), she was told that they thought there was something wrong with the motherboard and that they were thinking about shipping it out for service. She
was told that someone would call her to let her know what was going on.
No one has called her even once - she's had to call each time. She called again today, and again, after a long wait (and getting hung up on and generally given the run-around), she talked to a guy who basically told her the same thing she was told TWO DAYS AGO. They were "thinking" about sending it out for service. How long might that take? Oh, two to three weeks. At this point, my sister asked to speak to a manager; she was put on hold for five minutes and then told that he was "in a meeting" and would call her back. Which he did not do. I don't know how realistic it is, but at this point we just want the money refunded so we can buy a new computer. The customer service we've gotten is just horrible. I have the feeling that if my sister hadn't spent an endless amount of time on the phone trying to get info, even less would've been done than they've managed to do in almost two weeks. |

I read non-stop complaints about Best Buy and the Geek Squad on Consumerist. It is quite likely that whatever is wrong with your niece's computer has
nothing to do with viruses or the hard drive, and they're just giving you a complete run-around. I agree with you about going for a total refund at this
point.

Thank you for reminding me why I continue to but the extended warrantee from Dell on my 3 year old laptop. In '07 I was having major issues and they sent
someone out to replace the motherboard, while we were in London! When that didn't take care of it, they replaced the hard drive the night before
Thanksgiving. The warantee expires on 5/2 so they've been calling lately and I was considering not doing it but I thin the $150ish is worth the piece of
mind.

I hate Best Buy and have told all my friends and whoever will listen about the bad experiences with their return policy that I've had. It's nice to
know, kind of, that it wasn't just me!

I've had bad experiences with customer service at Best Buy but the one and only time I ever had to deal with the Geek Squad, they were super friendly,
helpful, and inexpensive.
Just realized that wasn't a hate. Hate to my company for banning radios and music (not even mp3 players with headphones are allowed). I'm cranky without being able to have ambient noise in the background to drown out some of my co-workers. |

Why would they have such a ban? What's the problem with people listening to music at their desks?

And I quote: "You are at work to work, not to be entertained." We can't even have those machines that make nature or babbling brook sounds.
It's part of this whole Total Housekeeping Management plan they've got going at our company, modeled after the plans that are big with Asian companies. |

That is so ridiculous. There is no reason why work can't be fun, and in fact, IMO, people tend to be more productive when they are having fun.

I've never heard of that -- Total Housekeeping Management? But I think most people listen to music through their headphones to help them be MORE
productive, not less. Are people not allowed to talk with each other about non-work matters, also?

Oh, don't even get me started on the THM plan at work. I could write a damn novel about how stupid it is. The short of it is that workstations should be
neat and organized and upheld to company standards. Fair enough, except that company standards are very strict. To the point of telling us how many personal
items we're allowed to have on the desk (5 btw). They gave us a 25 page document that explains the THM plan and what's allowed and what's not and
how the audit is conducted (each department gets audited once a month and gets demerits for being in violation). But the kicker? Everyone has to adhere to the
THM plan except the President's Office so the CEO and his 2 admins don't have to follow the THM rules.

Why would any company think that what works, culturally, in one country is going to work here? It works in Japan (or whatever Asian country they stole this
from)? Great. But there is no guarantee it is going to work here in the U.S., where we have a different perception of work. That doesn't mean that there
aren't things that we can't learn from other cultures about our work ethic but it does mean, IMO, that it is really stupid to try to wholesale import a
program that hasn't been developed for our cultural mores.

I'm a little pissed right now. I'm trying to tell my friend about this
shocking news story I just read about a 7 year old kid killing himself. Instead of the expected reaction, like shock or sympathy (not for me, in general), or
whatever, her first question was "where?" Ok... I told her Miami. Her next question? "Was he mexican?" I mean, seriously? Where's
the dismay or the sadness that a 7 year old kid killed himself? I asked her what the race had to do with it, and her reply was that she knows there's a
lot of mexicans in Miami, and she doesn't have a problem with Mexican people, and wait for it... Here's the classic line.... "I have Mexican and
portorican [sic] friends in Miami." Grrr..... Meanwhile, I still have not gotten the expected reaction.

What a terrible story... and unfortunately, not uncommon in the foster care system. There are many, many wonderful parents in the foster care system but the
system allows for some terrible incidences of abuse.
Poor little boy. |

There's hardly any Mexicans in Miami, compared to the Cuban population. What a strange question.
But what an unbelievably sad story -- it's hard for me to believe a child that young could experience despair so deep that they would want to die. But this child had a terrible life. ETA: I was looking for more info and found this story in the Miami Herald. I really don't like the lead at all -- I'm sorry, this was a horribly abused seven year old child and the likely victim of sexual abuse, not a "sexual predator." The framing of it makes me feel like we're supposed to be happy that he's dead now. http://www.miamiherald.com/486/story/1018138.html

I think that is a terrible lead. Obviously, he was exhibiting highly sexualized behavior, which is (again) not uncommon for children who have been abused
themselves. But even with that, to say that he was "well on his way to becoming a sexual predator" seems to me to be overstating things. The whole
article seems to be slanted to the idea that he was a dangerous predator to other children. He was 7! He was probably something of a danger to some of the
other kids but that's likely because he did not receive the treatment he needed in dealing with his own abuse.

Anderson Cooper has been covering cases of 11 year old boys killing themselves over the past two weeks. Both boys in different states were bullied at school,
being teased and called gay. They both hung themselves. One of them was found by his mother, the other by his sister. Their photos are seared into my memory
and I didn't think I would hear of a suicide by anyone younger than 11 for a very long time.
