My dad dropped in to see a friend of our family this week (I'll refer to him as R) who is receiving treatment for bowel cancer. He was surprised to see
R's daughter home, E, who's in her mid-20s, and asked her what she was doing there.
It turns out that several weeks ago E found a random lump on her neck and asked her sister to have a look at it for her. The short version is that E has now been diagnosed with cancer of the thyroid and is receiving radiation treatment. Dad didn't ask for too much of the details (I think he was too shocked and didn't want to get too personal) but I sent E an email just now letting her know that we're all thinking of her and hoping that things go well. I just feel so bad for this family. It's been a very up and down year for them - R lost his father earlier this year, one of R's sons got married in February, his other daughter is due to give birth to her first child in July, and now they've been hit twice by cancer. |

Yeesh. It seems to be going around. My mom just told me that her coworker, who just lost his wife to metastasized breast cancer about 6 mos ago, took his 22 YO
daughter in for a checkup for her IBS. She's been having a lot of problems with it, so they've been trying different treatments. Well, they found
polyps this time, and though they say these are not cancerous, she will definitely get cancer, and that they're recommending she go ahead and get a
colostomy. Yikes! At 22! Needless to say, they're looking into second and third opinions. Also, they said she doesn't have IBS, but some rarer,
stranger thing that's harder to treat. Fresh out of school, and now she has all this to cope with, plus her mother just died. So sad.
2009 is kicking everyone's ass. I hope E gets good news soon. |

2009 is kicking everyone's ass.For sure. I have a couple of (online) friends who have lost relatives unexpectedly this year - one lost her nephew about a month ago to a heart attack (he was only 30) and another lost her brother-in-law to suicide a few months ago. |

I have a friend who has a growth in his nasal passages. It's not cancerous (yay), but he does have to have pretty major reconstructive surgery, because the
growth has affected the bones around his eye.

That sounds horrific, SB.

Yet he looks normal. So, it's not like some disfiguring growth. I do feel horrible for him, though.

There's something about having something growing in nasal passages that freaks me out. Maybe I just imagine that he might have difficulty breathing. Maybe
it's just that my own sinuses give me so much trouble, and I don't even having anything extra growing in there.

I tackled my multi-vitamin problem - Flintstones chewables with Iron! I was going to go with the water packets and I considered the gummies, but I figured I
would be less likely to forget my daily "candy" treat.

I am...I believe the technical medical term for it is "sick as a dog." My sister diagnosed me with strep throat, but the internet says if you have
other cold symptoms (which I do), it's likely not strep but a "viral infection', by which I think they mean a cold.
Cold symptoms, in the sneezing and nose-blowing sense, are the least of my problems. My throat is killing me. My face is killing me. My ears hurt. My coughing has subsided somewhat, which is good because if I had to cough much with my head and throat feeling like this I think I'd prefer just to go with an early death. Sheesh. I hope I'm close to the downhill side of this thing. |

It's been a few days, Stel, are you feeling any better? I usually can handle almost any part of a cold but a sore throat really bothers me.
I haven't had an allergy attack since I started using the Neti pot. But, I can't swear that the Neti pot is the cause; I don't know that I've used it enough for it to matter. I don't use it on a daily basis, so it might just be a coincidence. There's been so much rain that maybe all the pollen that would be bothering me has been washed away. |

Thanks, Moppet, I'm finally starting to get better. I had a phone consult with my doctor yesterday and he said
based on my symptoms, it's probably the flu rather than just a cold. Meaning the symptoms will probably take longer (the doctor said about two weeks) to
totally go away. My achiness is finally better, and the sore throat isn't as bad, though it kind of comes and goes. I have a prescription for codeine cough
syrup that seems to be helping a little bit. I have quite a gross mucus gunk happening, though.
The neti pot has been a lifesaver for me, actually. I hadn't used it in ages but I've used it the last couple of days to soothe my nasal passages (it seems counter-intuitive to me that salt water would sooth irritated tissue, but whatever) and clear out gunk. I should make a habit of using it regularly for my sinus issues. |

Salt water can also be soothing for a sore throat. Our blood is salty; our tears are salty; salt water is soothing, as long as it's not a lot saltier than
we are.

I spoke too soon on the getting better thing. I ended up sleeping most of the day. An inability to stay awake appears to be my most pressing symptom at the
moment.

You need rest, Stella. Hope you're getting lots of it.

I'm afraid I might be coming down with something. I have the faintest hint of sinus discomfort, but it feels familiar. Plus, I'm really irritable and
unfocused. And I have no energy or strength today. I'm fortunate in that usually when I feel somthing coming on, it never quite takes hold, so I'm
hoping that's the case this time.

Gargle with warm salt water right now & take some vitamin C if you have any handy (otherwise drink a bunch of OJ).

My boss gave me some echinacea, so I've chewed some of that. I don't really have any access to salt right now, so I'll try that part when I get
home.

I'm not a gargling addict or anything, but I keep little salt packets in my desk for just such an occasion. When I remember & am someplace where
they're out, I'll grab a handful & stuff them in my bag.
