She didn't exactly fight them, but she clearly just wasn't into it. She played along at times, but was just determined to be miserable. She had a lot
of baggage, which I get, but perhaps she should have said no. She'd clearly seen the show, because she knew them when they ambushed her at the beginning,
so she totally knew what she was in for. She just wasn't used to seeing herself in womanly clothes, or makeup, or anything like that, so she just kept
declaring everything weird. It was kind of uncomfortable.

Moppet, what are your Michelle boards saying about Shorts-gate? I don't understand the problem; Is it just that people have gone stupid because it's
been ages since we've had a first lady who could rock shorts and look good?

Most of them are like "she rocks!" but some stupid person said that it's "against protocol" to wear shorts on Air Force One (uh, what?)
and someone else said she should have worn Bermuda shorts or pedal pushers. Bermuda shorts! Like she's 70 years old or something. She was going whitewater
rafting and hiking, for god's sake, you don't wear a gown doing those things. Would the critics not wear shorts on an outdoors vacation?

I don't know why they chose to visit the Grand Canyon in August. It's got to be 120 degrees there, or close to it. I saw a brief clip of Malia walking
with her father, and she was dragging her feet as if the heat was oppressive.

They probably went because now is when they had time, and it's an impressive American backdrop for a vacationing president and his family. I didn't
think the shorts were particularly flattering on her, but no one really looks amazing on vacation. You're supposed to wear shorts! I had no idea there was
a kerfuffle over them.
Though, FWIW, I enjoy a bermuda short. |

I agree it's impressive, but I wouldn't go to Alaska in January & I wouldn't go to the desert in August. I kind of look at it as common sense.

I don't think it was a big choice, like "let's go to Yellowstone and oh I'll have a town hall meeting while I'm here." I think since
he was already going to be there for the town hall, the family tagged along to make a vacay of it. I saw one photo where the kids were wearing windbreakers as
if it was a little chilly. So I guess there are a lot of temperature extremes there.
I went to Iceland in January. It was fun! It was dark a lot, though. |

Hee. I'm pretty sure that's a Clinton-and-Stacy-ism. But as I'm not a capri person at all, I'll stick to my bermuda shorts! Ha! They're
plural now!
ETA: I went into an Abercrombie today for the first time in years. That is a stupid store. I mean, I can't fit into anything in there, but it was so damn dark I couldn't see anything anyway. And they had a dude at the front of the store with no shirt on. Awkward. I wonder if that was part of his interview. And the womens' clothes were up on the third floor. Dude, you should not have to work that hard for wee tiny thin clothes. It was just weird.

Did it also have the ear-shattering music? That's how I know I'm too old for A&F -- it's too dark for me to see the clothes, and too noisy for
me to hear myself think.

Oh, yes. We actually started dancing at one point. Right before taking in the double zero skinny jeans. Those were some TINY jeans, and I salute anyone able to
get into them. You go, girl.

I'm so proud of myself for actually breaking out the sewing machine to sew a ripped seam in my pants. It only took, uh, four months of me just having the
pants on my dresser? I had to glance over the instructions so I could remember how to thread it and fill the bobbin, but other than that, no problems.
My sewing machine is sooo old. I bought it used, and it is about as old as I am. It also weighs 99 pounds. But damn, it's sturdy and it works. And I sew, like, never (just like with my knitting, I had a brief period of sewing interest that sputtered out) so I can't see wasting my money on anything new. |

They're so handy, though, for some things. I have jeans with an inch long hole in the seam, and I'm waiting til Thanksgiving to take them home to Mom
to have them done. I can't find anyone out here with a machine, and the seam will hold so much better stitched up on a machine. I guess I could do it up
now, and REdo it on the machine when I get there, but man. Extra steps. Too lazy.

Exactly. These are a pair of cords (which gives you an idea of how long they've been sitting on my dresser, waiting to be sewn) and there's no way
handstitching would have held well in that heavy fabric. Or, maybe it would have, but it just felt too much like work.

That's impressive to me! But this is coming from someone who is too lazy to fix the hem on a pair of black pants and instead broke out the safety pins.
And I'm a couple of days late on the Abercrombie discussion, but I took my younger cousin there last time she was in town. The first words out of my mouth were "why does the music have to be so damn loud?!?" (Seriously, why?) |

I swear I'm going to have to get rid of everything I own that is wool. I'm packing my clothes and I am finding so many things that have been nibbled by
carpet beetles. (Don't click if you don't want to know.)
This is INFURIATING. |

Are they clothes you only wear for certain seasons, MM? I hope what I'm about to write makes sense:

I don't really know anything about wigs, but different colored hair like that sounds very bad. I would do whatever you can to make sure your hair matches.
