I take "strategists" of all stripes with a grain of salt. How do you get that job, anyway?

Maybe it's like when McCain "suspended" his campaign. Look how well that worked!

So what's the scandal that's going to come out? Because that's the ONLY reason I can come up with for resigning.

Maybe she's the woman Mark Sanford has been seeing.
ETA: I've been hearing a snippet of her announcement on the radio: So, she says that she doesn't want to seek re-election, and doesn't want to spend the rest of her time in office as a lame duck. When does her term end? Because doesn't it seem like you should stay until the end of your term and announce *then* that you don't want to run again? Isn't that the way to avoid being a lame duck?

Right. The way to avoid being a lame duck is to announce that you aren't going to run 6 months before your term ends.
One of my colleagues and I were talking about how we think Mitt Romney is behind all of these blow ups with potential 2012 candidates, and we were wondering what would happen with Palin. Now we know! |

She had until Dec 2010 to govern and until June 2010 to declare presidential candidacy. Chuck Todd thinks she's going after big money by becoming a
"celeb".

Yeah, I just heard Chuck float that. I...dunno. But I find it very hard to believe she is walking away from the spotlight. Homegirl loves attention.

I would agree with Chuck Todd that seeking the limelight is probably part of her reasoning. Now, I think she has totally miscalculated if she thinks that is
an alternate route to the White House but I can completely believe that she thinks she is so special that she doesn't have to do the hard work to make
herself a credible candidate.

Ron Christie, Urkle all grown up, is gonna make me break something. Is he really still pulling the "Palin is more experienced than Obama" card out of
his butt? He's president, suck it up, jerk.

There is no way she can become President after this. Hell there's no way she'll become the Repub candidate after this. No experience, not knowledgble
about foriegn affairs, smell of corruption AND a quitter? No hope in hell.
That's my reasoning for scandal. I can't think how ANYONE could think this is the right way to the Presidency. On the slim chance she was the Repub canditate why would the people that voted Dem last election change because of her? |

I know. I thought Bill Press and David Schuster were going to die when he said that the Republican party doesn't have any problems right now.
John Dickerson at Slate seems to buy the "she wants to wave to adoring crowds" theory.

Daily Kos think she's under federal investigation for embezzlement dating back to her tenure in Wasilla. It seems the most likely, sane explanation to me.
I can't believe even Palin would believe this is a good way to lead up to a 2012 run.

If that's true, she's definitely doing the right thing. Now she can go out and cash in some big money before the hammer falls.

Good point.
I'm reading the Vanity Fair story about her. This woman is really interesting, I guess that's the most neutral term I could use.

That would also explain that rambling part of her speech where she discussed legal costs. But why didn't she resign immediately and avoid giving the
"gotcha" media 3 weeks, at least, to obsess?

I don't know what to think but I do know that the thought of the campaigning for 2012 starting NOW makes me very, very tired. Remember when we used to have
some time between presidential campaigns?

Remember when we thought 2 years of presidential campaigning was too long? Oy.
I'm trying to believe that this means we won't have to see or hear Sarah Palin much longer. Keep hope alive! The Black Snob's comment cracked me up: Without the governorship, you're just some woman who gets into really public fights with people. And did you really NEED more drama? You're already five different Lifetime Movies of the Week! All you need to do is have a torrid affair with Mark Sanford and the universe will collapse in on itself, swallowing the Republican Party into a black hole of WTF-ness.

Out of politics altogether? Surely we couldn't all be this lucky. Heh. I'll come back with some wonderful stuff when I'm up for it. |

She's updated her Facebook page to claim she's quitting so she can play a more "national role" in uniting the country on conservative
principles. So yes, less than 6 months into the new administration, she's launching her 2012 presidential campaign.
Can we please now hunt her down & shoot at her from helicopters? Clearly she's a pestilential presence. |

Joan Walsh at Salon has posted a letter
from Palin's personal attorney that essentially threatens media outlets for reporting the speculation that forthcoming criminal allegations may explain why
Palin resigned. Which, of course, would lead me to conclude that those allegations are closer to the truth than they aren't.
Also, I don't know how anyone can take Bill Kristol seriously anymore but he must like candidates he thinks are malleable.
